Today marks an important day for the Tandridge Liberal Democrat team, as the group announces a change in leadership at the District Council. Following the resignation of Cllr Jeffrey Gray, Cllr Ben Horne has stepped into the role of group leader.

Cllr Horne paid tribute to Jeffrey’s outstanding leadership over the past two years, highlighting the huge contribution he has made to strengthening the Liberal Democrat presence at Tandridge. Thanks to Jeffrey’s tireless efforts, the group is now the second largest on the council – and the official opposition to the administration.

Speaking on a visit to Whyteleafe Recreation Ground, Cllr Horne said:

“Jeffrey has been a passionate advocate for affordable housing and for ensuring every pound of council tax is spent wisely. His commitment to fairness, accountability, and community has left a lasting legacy.”

Reflecting on his decision to stand down, Cllr Gray said:

“I want to thank the team of officers for helping to make Tandridge a more stable organisation in recent years, creating a platform for improving services and avoiding the problems facing many other councils. I hope resources will now be used to benefit residents and support a smooth transition to Unitary Authority. I plan to move closer to family in retirement, but will follow Tandridge with interest.”

Cllr Horne said he was honoured to take on the leadership role and pledged that the group would continue to stand up for residents and hold the administration to account.

“Our focus will remain on the issues that matter most: affordable homes, transparent spending, and strong local services.”

The Liberal Democrat team thanked Jeffrey for his years of dedicated service and wished him well for the future.

A by-election will now be held in Whyteleafe, where local campaigner Tony Pearce is standing as the Liberal Democrat candidate to succeed Jeffrey.

👉 We’re encouraging all residents to back Tony and help strengthen the Liberal Democrat voice at Tandridge District Council.
